The legacy of Sibelius forms the backbone of an invigorating concert which also features Thomas Adès’ recent Violin Concerto ‘Concentric Paths’.
Like most of his tone poems, Sibelius’ last major work, Tapiola, draws on the Finnish national epic Kalevala for its inspiration, portraying a woodland realm of spirits through characteristically icy orchestration. Tüür’s light-infused Searching for Roots is a homage to the great Finn, while Saariaho references her compatriot more obliquely in the evocative string orchestra piece Nymphea Reflections.
Premiered to great acclaim at the 2005 Proms, Adès’ pithy concerto is a ravishing score combining dizzying virtuosity with heartfelt lyricism, the traditions of the past with the unmistakably contemporary.
