Two works examining the idea of the ritual in music frame an exploration of music for strings in this fascinating programme. The contemplative mood of Messiaen’s Les Offrandes Oubliées, which marked his arrival on the music scene in 1931, is contrasted with the fierce declamations of his pupil Xenakis’ Le Sacrifice, a short but highly charged work.
The influence of both these composers is undeniable in Jonny Greenwood’s texturally fascinating Popcorn Superhet Receiver, which won the BBC Radio 3 Listeners’ Award at the 2006 British Composer Awards. Another young British composer, Emily Hall, is the recipient of the orchestra’s second commission in a work for cello, electronics and orchestra. And the centrepiece of the evening is Britten’s masterful Serenade, which sets a selection of poems on the theme of night to mesmeric effect.
